In a recent post, Nigerian music icon Timaya opened up about the key figure who helped shape his music journey a Rastaman named MG. According to Timaya, MG was more than just a man selling leather jackets and caps; he was a guiding light in Timaya’s life. MG lived the full Jamaican lifestyle in Port Harcourt and had a major influence on Timaya’s music career.

Timaya shared that his older brother introduced him to MG, saying, “Our last born loves music and needs guidance and direction.” It was MG who helped Timaya write his first song, taught him how to rehearse, and explained the reggae language, teaching him how to use words with feeling. Timaya says, “From him, I learned how to freestyle and stay on key.”

Despite the strong connection to reggae, MG wasn’t driven by wealth or material comfort. He built a simple house in his village with a special roof, living a humble life. Timaya admired his mentor’s dedication to reggae but had a different vision. Timaya loved the music, but he also wanted to enjoy success on his own terms. He chose to chase success while maintaining his love for the reggae sound.

Timaya’s journey shows the power of mentorship and the drive to make a name for oneself. It’s a beautiful reminder of the importance of staying true to your roots while carving your own path.
